“Cancer and associated treatments are like a big storm. Our yoga practice can be the sun kissing the rain and turning the sky into a showroom of wonderous colors.”

Sabine Drescher, Y4C Certified Instructor

What is Oncology Yoga?

Oncology Yoga is an evidence informed yoga method tailored to address the specific physical and emotional needs left by cancer and cancer treatments. It is a comprehensive practice that matches breath and movements to mitigate the short- and long-term side effects of cancer and its treatments.

Oncology yoga is a gentle and therapeutic style of yoga adapted to accommodate the specific challenges cancer patients may face during their treatment and recovery journey. It is designed to address the physical discomfort, emotional distress, and mental stress that often accompanies a cancer diagnosis and its associated treatments.

  • find solutions for treatment side effects
  • reduce stress and improve sleep
  • give a sense of well-being
  • cultivate hope and provide a supportive community

Key Focus Areas of Oncology Yoga:

  1. Physical Comfort: Oncology yoga pays special attention to physical comfort and safety. It utilizes a combination of gentle postures, modified movements, and the use of props (such as bolsters, blankets, and straps) to ensure that participants can practice yoga comfortably and without strain. The focus is on maintaining or improving flexibility, strength, and balance while avoiding any potential harm or discomfort.
  2. Stress Reduction: Cancer patients often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. Oncology yoga incorporates mindfulness techniques, breathing exercises, and meditation to help individuals manage their stress levels. These practices promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall emotional well-being.
  3. Pain Management: Cancer and its treatments can lead to various physical discomforts and pain. Oncology yoga includes gentle stretches and movements that can help alleviate pain and discomfort, especially in areas affected by cancer or surgery. It aims to improve body awareness and reduce muscle tension.
  4. Energy Restoration: Fatigue is a common side effect of cancer treatment. Oncology yoga incorporates practices that help restore energy levels, combat fatigue, and improve vitality. These practices are gentle and aimed at rejuvenation rather than strenuous physical exertion.
  5. Emotional Support: Coping with a cancer diagnosis can be emotionally challenging. Oncology yoga provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can express their emotions, connect with others facing similar challenges, and find emotional healing and resilience.
  6. Empowerment and Self-Care: Oncology yoga encourages cancer patients to take an active role in their healing process. By teaching self-care practices and fostering a sense of empowerment, individuals can regain a sense of control over their bodies and minds.
  7. Adaptability: Oncology yoga instructors are trained to adapt their teaching to meet the specific needs of each participant. This adaptability is essential because cancer treatments and the impact of cancer can vary greatly among individuals. Customized practices are developed to suit the unique circumstances of each person.
  8. Safe and Inclusive Environment: Oncology yoga classes are conducted in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Instructors are often trained to be sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients and survivors.

In summary, oncology yoga is a compassionate and therapeutic approach to yoga that seeks to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors. It can be a valuable complement to conventional medical care and a source of empowerment and healing for those on their cancer journey.
